The Pain You Seek
“For generations, you cursed my name in anger and whispered it in fear. Now you praise it in worship. Medea.”
Medea, the mythological mother who murdered her own children out of revenge, is alive and living in modern day New York City. As an artist and cultural icon, she has millions of fans who hang on every new song and fashion line. People flock to her to be reborn and feel special. She lets them do it, but she hates them at the same time. They are the ones who have made her immortal. They see her as a monster, but they look past it as part of their self-deception.
Claire Mitchell is a failing young writer at a small magazine. She wants to know why people are willing to compromise their morality for a child-killer. She pursues Medea’s people, hoping to find the answer she needs to write an article that will rejuvenate her voice and save her career. Instead, she finds a secret buried so deeply and protected so fervently, that it threatens to overthrow the commercial empire Medea has created. As Claire pursues this new lead, she is blind to how much she resembles the very people she criticizes as hypocrites for their fanaticism.
As she interviews the different circles of people surrounding Medea, Claire must resolve the ethical compromises she makes in the name of her ambition. When Claire finally confronts Medea in person, she must face the truth about herself as much as she demands the truth from the woman she cannot morally endure.
